What is the Connection Between Adrenal Fatigue and SVT?

If you were to track your SVT symptoms and activities before an episode, chances are you were exhausted physically or emotionally, didn’t eat properly (and/or ate something you are allergic/sensitive to), dehydrated, constipated or sleep-deprived. If your adrenals were in full function, these triggers may not have tripped off an electrical mis-fire. But when the adrenals are fatigued you are more at risk for the onset of an SVT episode.

Adrenal Fatigue is a set of symptoms that occur when your adrenal glands, located atop your kidneys, are not functioning as well as they should usually because they are being taxed. These glands are responsible for producing hormones that assist the body in critical functions, including regulating Cortisol, thyroid function, blood pressure and blood sugar, metabolizing proteins and fats, and supporting the body to respond to and cope with stress, illness, and injury. Taking good care of our adrenal function and cortisol regulation is so important for our overall sense of wellness, especially because when cortisol levels are chronically elevated because of chronic stress, it creates an inflammatory response in the body.

I find that Adrenal Fatigue is a precursor to SVT with myself and many of my SVT clients. personally had adrenal fatigue for years before my first SVT and it continued to be one of the main things I had to manage to help me prevent SVT overall.

Not all SVT patients have adrenal fatigue, but those who do may be contributing to the frequency of their episodes.

Common Signs and Symptoms of Adrenal Fatigue:

  • Feeling depleted
  • Tired but wired feeling
  • Never feel rested upon awakening
  • General lethargy and fatigue throughout the day
  • Lack of energy to perform daily tasks
  • Low stamina to handle stress and easily overwhelmed or irritated
  • Sensitive to outside noise
  • Dependent on stimulants like sugar and caffeine to get through the day
  • Cravings for salty foods or riding the “sweet and salty” craving merry-go-round
  • Mild depression or anxiety
  • Food allergies and sensitivities; dark circles under the eyes
  • Low blood sugar, low blood pressure, Low body temperature
  • Heart palpations
  • Unexplained hair loss
  • Weight gain or low thyroid function
  • Chronic infections caused by bacterial, virus, fungus and/or yeast
  • Dizziness

How does this happen? The most common reasons are generally when the adrenals are chronically overworked. Things like constant chronic stress, underlying illness, poor diet and the inability to escape physical, emotional, or psychological stressors which can include anything from a bad relationship to a chemical or food sensitivity and more. All of this can be exacerbated by lifestyle choices or beliefs and the way we manage our life. Things like always driving ourselves to do more, accomplish more, be more productive, stay up late etc., create a general “pattern of pushing ourselves past our limits”,  which is also a major SVT trigger for many. SVT does not respond well to us constantly pushing ourselves which is why we are all much more likely to have an SVT on the days where we are “depleted” from lack of sleep, dehydration, stress etc.

It might be easy to see how a one-time huge stress (injury, death of a loved one, even a course of corticosteroids) has the potential to affect your adrenal health, but so does ongoing continued stress such as a toxic boss, an unfulfilling relationship or financial pressures.  All these factors set you up for an SVT episode directly or indirectly through adrenal fatigue.

However, you can take steps to incorporate new diet and lifestyle habits into your daily routine that can slowly and significantly improve your adrenal health and reduce your SVT’s.

Healthy Habits to Heal and Maintain Adrenal Function

 Diet

  • Identify food sensitivities and eliminate GLUTEN and possibly dairy.
  • Dramatically reduce or eliminate WHITE sugar and processed food from your diet.
  • Eat vegetables or fruit at every meal and use the Fat-Fiber-Protein eating combination that I outline in The SVT Prevention Diet E-Book here.
  • Drink purified water throughout the day: eight glasses or approximately half your weight in ounces.
  • Only eating organic, hormone free meat and dairy
  • Stop eating and drinking alcohol 3-4 hours before bed. I actually now recommend no alcohol especially for women approaching peri-menopause and during menopause.

Rest

  • Try to go to sleep at the same time overnight to help the body develop a healthy sleep cycle.
  • Get 7-8 hours of sleep.
  • Taking small breaks throughout the day. No need to fall asleep, just letting yourself rest, close your eyes, even for 10 minutes
  • Ask yourself what you need? What would feel restorative?

Lifestyle Habits, Healing Practices and Routines

  • Incorporate Healing practices such as Massage, Acupuncture, Journaling, meditation.
  • Create more time and space to connect with your heart and Intuition, consider a morning routine including time to connect with yourself.
  • Examine the impact that long standing emotional issues, toxic family dynamics or suppressed childhood wounding is having on you
  • Commit to really working on identifying what is draining you and resolving chronic emotional, old and long term stress
  • Ask yourself, What is depleting or draining you?
  • Learn about the energy of what drives you to push yourself so hard, to live under constant pressure or force yourself past your limits. Consider working with a life coach to help you identify unhealthy patterns and behaviors in your life.
  • Invite in more feminine-led energy qualities such as being more gentle with yourself, listening to your needs, and creating space for your heart’s messages to communicate with you more frequently and more clearly.
  • Seek balance in work and personal life; guard your free time with fulfilling activities.

Body Movement + Physical relaxation

  • Gentle Exercise at least three times a week (but don’t exhaust yourself either).
  • Stretching, walking, yoga, Tai chi

Finally, I am hosting a class this Tuesday March 22nd  2022,  about Exploring Masculine & Feminine Energy for SVT Healing.

I created this class because during the height of my SVT, I was working hard, pushing myself way past my limits every day, going to bed late, drinking coffee with lots of sugar, eating cookies for breakfast and ignoring my needs. I had exhausted my adrenals and it took a lot of work including adding in supplements, and making serious lifestyle changes to help me. It also meant looking at why I was pushing myself so hard and I have since learned that energetically pushing yourself hard, being demanding on yourself, and forcing yourself to do things that feel stressful all the time are all examples of an abundance of “unhealthy” masculine energy. We all have masculine and feminine energy, regardless of gender and it’s fascinating to learn more about how these energies are playing out in your life. This class will explore what masculine and feminine is, the difference between masculine and feminine energetic qualities,  and how these energies reveal themselves through different behaviors and thought patterns in our lives; resulting in either driving our SVT or nurturing our ability to heal.

My intention by sharing my information and classes is always to help people learn methods to self-heal and become empowered;)

Here’s is what you will learn in my upcoming class:

  • The qualities of masculine and feminine energy
  • What unhealthy masculine energy is and how forcing yourself, constantly driving yourself and more contributes to your SVT
  • Why SVT does not respond well when we PUSH ourselves
  • What feminine energy is and why it’s considered the HEALING energy
  • How to nurture fear, what is the fear voice, and learn to listen to our heart voice instead
  • How feminine energy helps you connect with your heart’s true essence and create more healing practices in your life.
  • What Feminine Healing practices are and which ones benefit SVT
  • How to raise your heart vibration
  • Guided Journaling Questions
  • and more.

This class comes with a PDF guide and workbook for your reference including guided journaling and affirmations.

This class is hosted on ZOOM. Aprox 1.5 hours including Q + A and hopefully some time for a little guided journaling!

Once you register, you will receive a zoom link via email the morning of class, along with the PDF guide/workbook.

If you cannot make the live class, a recording will be emailed to you afterwards. You can submit your questions beforehand if you can’t make the live class or during if you are able to make it live.

Thank you for reading! I hope that you take good care of your adrenals and that this information helps you to make connections between your lifestyle and your SVT!
