  • From Mh on Magnesium and SVT: Is Magnesium Essential to SVT Prevention and Good Health?

Thank you for this article! After spraying mag oil on my arms an SVT episode stopped after 2 minutes! And that was after it had gone on for about 2 hours. I did have trouble sleeping last night and a cramp a couple of days before, as well as constipation. I am in disbelief at how quickly this worked for me! Thank you!

  • From Lisa on Why do I have SVT?

After being in excellent health for 63 years, I was recently diagnosed with SVT. I passed out and was taken to the hospital and admitted for observation. I wore a heart monitor for 30 days and then met with a cardiologist who immediately wanted to schedule an ablation. I was too afraid to have that procedure, so I opted for the medication route. I’m still experiencing mild symptoms, which are unsettling but tolerable. The only issue that I feel wasn’t addressed is that my SVT is most often triggered by swallowing. I feel dizzy and as if I might faint sometimes while having a meal. Is that common for people who have SVT?

Dear all, a fit uk guy 56 here but I’ve just booked a honeymoon trip to Africa, traveling from Vic falls to Capetown – truly a trip of a lifetime for me, a trip that I’ve wanted to do forever – but with over 4 thousand miles overland in a safari truck to very remote places I’m suddenly panicking. I hardly get SVT and have a pill in my pocket approach (Bisoprolol) – as it seems to happen so infrequently Maybe a couple of times a year – usually when I’m doing exercise, and after a night with alcohol perhaps! I run 3 x 5km ever week at home with no problems. Should I be doing this epic journey? Please help! I so want to do this trip! – I was recently on a trip to Croatia I was doing a hill hike and had an attack up on the hillside and it made me feel so vulnerable. The valsalva manoeuvre didn’t work and I took a pill – I thought it wasn’t going to work at first – but after about 90 mins whilst carefully picking my way down, I managed to get to the town and laid down and my heartbeat calmed. But it took a while! I now feel so scared of the Africa trip -if I knew the Bisoprolol would always 100% work then I would be ok as I would know I could trust it – but does it? Perhaps if I just take it everyday of the trip as as precaution it would be 100% effective? I would obviously have to take anti malarial tablets too and have found that Doxycycline will not interfere with the Bisoprolol (other to ones apparently do). Could an attack still happen if I was taking it every day? Or if pill in the pocket approach woukd taking a pill once SVT sets in definitely work? If I could not stop an attack and I was 100’s of mikes from a medical centre would I be o on? I would panic for sure! But the pill should work shouldn’t it? My consultant hardly gave any advice but because I have no heart defect he said yhe SVT could go for days and I’d be ok? Is that right? At least I have time in my side then?I suppose if I was somewhere really remote and I couldn’t stop it I’d have to travel in a truck for hours/days to get to a medical facility (or in a real emergency call an air ambulance?). Off r would I just pass out and reset? Or coukd I be risking heart failure? Am I just worrying about this too much – am I over thinking this?!! (my partner so wants to do this trip too.!). And we’ve booked which was before my Croatia episode when I was feeling much more confident) Is it just anxiety of it happening and being a bit uncomfortable until it gets sorted or is is it a real risk I’m taking? I would love to hear your stories and get hour advice! Please help, a lovely honeymoon trip that I was so looking forward to has suddenly turned into a nightmare – something that I’m dreading and I should be really looking forward to it! With love and bear wise he’s to you all

Dear Jim, I am so sorry that I took so long to reply to this! I hope that it’s not too late to give you some of my suggestions. First off, I would travel with the needleless syringes in case you need to use them. Having a way to “break” an SVT should you have one will help to keep you calm in the event that you do have to use it. The modified valsalva is one of the most effective ways to break an SVT that I have found. Always have one in your pocket and ask your partner to keep one in their bag etc. My newest way that I also like to use to break an SVT is to physically massage my vagus nerve through my stomach during an episode. I like to lay on the ground and rotate between the modified valsalva, yoga postures and massage. However, the goal would be to avoid having an episode altogether so here are some suggestions…first off stay super hydrated, especially on the plane. Bring your electrolytes, cal mag citrate, chloryphl etc and be sure to add it to your water to keep those minerals flowing. I would avoid any of your clear triggers (if you know them) during flight and travel. So for example for me, that would be alcohol for sure and white sugar or large carb dense meals. No drinking on the plane to soothe the nerves. Find other ways such as calming guided meditations, essential oils, magnesium etc. Pack healthy snacks that you can eat on the plane and travel with. I like almond butter and jelly sandwiches on GF toast, rice crackers, apple slices and almond butter, raisins, yogurt parfaits with banana and honey etc. Bring your vitimans such as your magnesium, and B vitimans, etc. whatever you like to take. I never travel without any of those things. Start taking the best possible care of yourself now, sort of like “training” so that you are in great condition and not in a depleted state prior. If you need further help, please reach out to set up an SVT health coaching session with me on zoom. Wishing you all the best, Laura

  • From LaJuana on SVT Trigger questions

I’m 70 years old and been on metaprolol for over 20 years. I lost my only sib in February. Then in August starting having rapid palpitations. They did stress test with thyillum and labs and EKG all negative. Then they did a 7 day heart monitor and found SVT. They changed my medicine and still had palpitations. Was taken off that medicine and starting soteol today. I am very leary since it has some bad side effects too. I have severe pain in neck and back with sciatica. Fibromyalgia. I’m not overweight but do eat lots of bad food. Want to get my health back.

Hello, Thanks for your comment and I am so sorry for the loss of your only sibling. Im guessing that its not a coincidence that your SVT has gotten worse since dealing with that loss. I would recommend writing/journaling to try to process some of the grief that you are feeling. Also really holding yourself with a lot of compassion will help. Letting yourself grieve and fully feel what your feeling is not always easy or welcomed but it is very effective to help our hearts heal. I would also look into magnesium and B vitimans for the nervous system. Wishing you all the best, Laura

  • From Valerie Geddes Kernohan on SVT Class-Energetic Contributors to SVT

Thanks Laura for your help with SVT and so glad you have recovered from Covid and sorry about the recent loss of your friend. I have found that spicy foods such as hot sauce and chili peppers are a trigger for me. The magnesium that you have suggested has really helped and I try to drink two cups of coconut water a day for potassium. I also take ubiquinol and EPA DHA from algae source and ground flax seed. I am vegan. My SVT is called multi focal atrial tachycardia which is quite unusual but it is sometimes seen in older patients. I am 68. I also have mild mitral regurgitation in addition to this. Cardiologist does not think that there was a connection between the two. My heart beat has gotten as high as 195. I have found one way to convert out of my SVT is to lay flat on my back with my feet straight up in the air for a few minutes. Not sure how I am going to pull this off in the middle of the city ha but I try to not worry about what might never happen. I also have chosen to not take medication at this time. Thanks again for your help and support Laura and I wish you the best.

    • From laura on SVT Class-Energetic Contributors to SVT

Thank you Valerie for your message! The reason why spicy foods might be triggering you is because they are creating more “heat” in your body and SVT is an “excess heat” condition in Chinese medicine so we want to try to help COOL our bodies through cooling foods, and emotions etc. Also, have you tried blowing in to the needleless syringe to convert? That is a very effective method, and you do in in conjunction with raising the legs. Thank you for reading and I wish you continued healing! xo

Also drink more water, take magnesium, and layer in tons of self care! Massage, gentle yoga, journaling, emotional release work, and loving self-care! What ares of live do you need support with? Hi Cindy,

Im so sorry for the difficulties that you are facing with the loss of your brother and trouble with your son. These are absolutely some of the things that impact our heart and SVT. The best advice I can give on this is to treat yourself with as much self-compassion and gentleness as possible. Keep telling yourself that you set a boundary with your son and that is was really hard to do so, but that is what you felt was the right thing at the time. Always remember that rejection is Gods protection. Think about other times in your life where you did or did not set boundaries and there were harsh consequences. Make sure you hold space for yourself to grieve these looses and challenges are bringing up for you and let your heart express itself and whatever it needs. Only you can be there for yourself. Give yourself lots of love and compassion, and always be there for yourself. Sending you lots of love and support, and keep up the amazing work with your Diet! Let me know how else I can help. Laura

  • From Harley Trumbo on Why do I have SVT?

Thought I was having a heart attack. A full day in the EMERGENCY room. Ten days of wearing a monitor. Multiple expensive tests. My arrogant cardiologist prescribed ELIQUIS and diagnosed me with A-FIB. He told me to get used to seeing him every three months. He scheduled a surgery to install a pace maker. I refused to take ELIQUIS. I got a second opinion from another cardiologist. He said I had SVT. I tried to determine the trigger as I had enjoyed great health up to this point. I connected the first symtoms to long work days in the hot sun at the farm. Tons of muscle cramps. My niece reminded me that my heart was a muscle and was probably cramping as well. Started eating foods that were high in magnesium and potassium. Drank cranberry juice with coconut water and two drops of iodine daily. Included fasting 2X’s a week. Adding fresh ground ginger to my coffee. I went from not being able to put more than three regular heart beats together to running strings of 500 perfect heartbeats together. I’m 64. My heart rate is 57 bpm. My bp is 110/70. Last checkup said I have zero evidence of SVT. Went from having no energy and forced to sit on the couch for weeks to cutting down hundreds of trees with my chainsaw for weeks on end. Four mile hikes on rugged trails and twenty mile daily bike rides are part of my weekly routine. I want to thank you for encouraging me to take steps to heal myself. Both “cardiologists” offered me no natural healing. Dangerous pills and lifetime doctor visits were the best they could do. They both said I’d have my heart condition for life. So appreciate the encouragement and alternatives you offer.

I’m so glad to hear that the dietary changes are helping you. I ALWAYS noticed that I had leg craps for 1-2 days prior to an SVT. Hi Rosalie,

For you, it sounds really important to look at your diet! Are you vegetarian or vegan or do you eat meat and dairy? I think a diet of mostly plants, some fish, is best. I rarely consume any meat at all and have also reduced all my dairy in the last 2 years. I maybe have cheese 1 x per month if that. Your system sounds overwhelmed. Read my SVT Prevention Diet to learn about the possibilities of an overburdened lymphatic system and undiagnosed food sensitivities. You have to reduce your sugar as well. its ALL CONNECTED! Plus take your magnesium and drink tons of water, electrolytes etc.

  • From Michael Champagnie on SVT-Suffering to Self Care

Hey guys newly diagnosed with SVT but it wasn’t a surprise. I am a 28 yo male and as far as I remember I’ve always been out of breathe and have a high heart rate after any exercise. Two years ago when my flairs started (continued throughout) I was always told, “oh you have anxiety or you just need to drink more water your probably dehydrated” and so I took it as that. LSS, I finally was able to get my cardiologist to give me a heart monitor and one day about 30 minutes after a morning walk Boom! I had an episode, worse I’ve ever had. Heart rate peaked at 170 then a ER doctor broke the sad yet relieving news. For the past four months I’ve been on gaba and L-Theanine supplements and boy it’s been a life changer for me. Yes some days were not as good but for the most part they helped a lot! While hospitalized I saw a cardiologist who told me that the gaba and theanine supplements are making my SVT worse because it was stimulating my heart. These were of course the only thing that had ever help with my “Anxiety” (SVT). I have a theory, if I control my anxiety, which I know I actually do have I can control the SVT episodes????.
So guys I am stuck between a rock and a hard place and I am scared. Any advice?

    Hi Laura,
I happened on your site recently while looking for holistic ways to deal with SVT. I too have noticed a difference when reducing gluten in my diet. I never ate much sugar to begin with and have stopped it. I use a transdermal magnesium twice a day. Oral magnesium causes too much digestive upset in my case. I increased my water intake a lot after reading one of your blogs. I use a form of breathing called box breathing when meditating. I can feel a difference in minutes. I do have a question. I get very amped up when I have to see my doctor. I can take my BP a few hours prior and it’s normal as is my heart rate. The minute I get in the office my BP has gone up a lot as has my heart rate. My normal heart rate is around 65-75 BPM. In the office it will be over 100. Any ideas on what I can do ? I keep thinking I am in fight or flight so the adrenals must be involved.

Hi Jim, I would say to drink or spray a little magnesium just prior but if it upsets your stomach you can try homeopathy or essential oils. AND, I would try to speak to your anxiety and ask it questions…Why are you so nervous to go, what about going is brining up nervous feelings? Really try to think about it and open your mind…Do you feel disempowered at the doctors office? pressured in any way? Try to identify what is coming up for you and then support yourself…Things like…remembering that you can think about ANYTHING before deciding and committing…You are in charge of your health decisions, etc…AND, bring with you anything you physically need to feel safe and comfortable..A bottle of cold water, lavender oil to apply, ear phones to listen to calming music…etc. Let me know if you figure out why this is happening, I would love to know and support you!

    Hi Laura,

I came across your website and it’s been a world of help.

Who would of thought gluten would have anything to do with SVT… Certainly not any of the Drs I’ve seen.

I’ve been on the beta blocker and tried other prescriptions with only side effects I couldn’t stand… even a magnesium supplement didn’t help.

I’ve only been on your recommended diet for a couple weeks… I was eating cereal every morning and two chicken sandwiches a day… I cut out the cereal for oatmeal or eggs… and my sandwich’s are now gluten free bread.

Switching up my eating habits and drinking twice the water, I can already see a difference after just a couple of weeks.

I still need to be more strict, especially on the weekends… but it’s great to finally see some kind of improvement.

Thanks so much for your website! 👍

Thank you so much for posting this article. I only just got SVT for the first time this year, at age 38, and I am having it alongside gastric disturbances and digestion/elimination issues (at least partially caused by stress). I have been clueless about what is typical for this condition, and I find this article to be very helpful. I was also very lucky to find a Dr who would diagnose this and give me a med called Bystolic. There were no food-suggestions or pamphlets on SVT in the medical office, and there has already been some new food triggers, so I will have to research this on my own.

    Hi Laura,

I was so pleased to find your site. As a retired nurse, and a person who has had anxiety, panic disorder and related issues my entire life, I have to wonder if all of this is ” connected” as I have just been diagnosed with SVT after wearing an event monitor for 8 days. I had over 2600 events that were caught on the monitor! Mine are mostly short runs of SVT, but, I have had really bad episodes as well, when I had syncope ( near fainting) when I was working physically lifting items etc., so, I am very aware of the fear involved in this. I have a very irregular heart beat that I can sense sometimes….but, not others, that goes along with this. I am going to try your tips as I suspect you are very right about the triggers of this condition!
